Cabin trip- day two; it begins

Cabin trip, day two.

After the fun and slightly wild night we had on night one of the cabin stay, many of our family was hurting when they had to get up early on day two.

Beka’s Dad and Momma Gail had bought lift tickets for most of the family to go snowboarding while we were all in Big Bear. Beka was not going (so she could take care of Emery, who also was not snowboarding…yet), but Michael was more than excited to try it. He had been skiing once before, but it was not a pleasant experience. It was when we lived in Vegas, and we drove up to Utah to try it out. However Beka threw up five times in the car on the winding trip up, and when up there, Michael got a severe eye infection and had to remove his contacts (he cannot see without his contacts, and did not bring his glasses). Plus, he was performing at the time, so he could not really go hard because if he were to hurt himself (which is eerily easy to do when you are skiing) he would be out of a job. So it is safe to say it was not a fun experience. But that did not stop Michael from wanting to try the slopes again.

So he was up and ready by 6am to head up the mountain. He had borrowed all his snow gear and board from a friend (thanks Scotese! You saved us so much Money!!!) and he was so excited!

Beka had planned to sleep in, then bring lunch to them later. But Emery was still on Central time, so he got up with the rest of crazies, thus, so did Beka. She was not sure if it was from waking up early, or from eating too many snacks the night before, but she did not feel well. So she handed off Emery to a very eager Grandma, who was also up early to see all her kiddos off, and tried to get some more sleep.

But sleep did not help. She tried eating some eggs and toast made by her sweet Steve Pop, but that did not help either. Becca (her brother’s girlfriend – confusing, I know) also stayed behind due to a broken foot. She was not feeling so hot either, so we just chalked it up to the high altitude. However when Beka tried taking a shower to shake off the gross feeling she had, the vomiting began. She felt better, as she always does after throwing up, for about an hour, but soon she had to run to the bathroom again.

Hoping that was the end of it, we loaded up the car with lunch for the boarders, and hit the hill. In the car was Beka’s Mom, Steve Pop, Emery, and Becca. Emery was dressed in his new "snow border in training clothes from Uncle Zach and Auntie Robin.

It was a VERY winding way up, and Beka had Steve Pop pull over many times so she could throw up. Luckily she brought a trash can with her in her Mom’s car (Everyone was thankful she did). After the drive that seemed FOREVER, we finally got to the brave ones on the slope.

Michael had been having a GREAT time snowboarding. He always picks up things fast, and this was no different. There were a few epic tumbles, but for the most part he really was good! And he looked like this, so he was already awesome:

When we were all eating lunch (save for Beka. Nothing sounded good), Rochelle (Beka’s older sister) mentioned that she had thrown up that morning too while on the slopes. And before lunch was over, so did J.J. (her little brother). Oh no, it looked like the beginning of something awful….. and it was spreading.

After lunch many of us went into town to get warm and look around. We ended up in a cafĂ© called the Teddy Bear restaurant (EVERYTHING in Big Bear is super themed out).  Beka ordered some hashbrowns, but kept feeling sicker and sicker, and finally gave up trying to eat and went to lay down in the car. Beka HATES to feel like a burden on people, but ended up feeling so awful that she asked her Mom to drive her back to the Cabin. She had a fever, chills, and was sweating. Michael and the others who had continued snowboarding were on their way into town, so Michael jumped in the car back to take care of Beka (what a sweet husband). Team Oakley was very bummed to be coming back early. We were all celebrating Robin’s (our sister in law) birthday that night. But we had to do what was best for us, so home it was.

The rest of the night is a blur. Beka went to bed to try to sleep off her sick. Michael checked on her throughout the night. She was having fever dreams and kept saying funny things in her sleep. At one point she told Michael “I won the penguin award!”. Neither of us know what that meant, but it was amusing.

It turns out that what everybody felt was a bad case of the stomach flu. And when you have as many people in a small cabin with one bathroom as we did, it spread like wildfire. Lots of us were up that night throwing up. Fun times.

It was not how we thought day two would turn out, but things happen, and you just have to roll with it. Tomorrow was another day, and hopefully things would be looking up for Team Oakley.

Stay tuned!

Love
Team Oakley
