Baby Wrapping FAIL!

When you have a baby, people say that the parental instincts just "kick in". There is no handbook for this junk, you are just supposed to trial and and error feel it out. And for the most part that works, and you know what to do and what not to do. However, Team Oakley feels that people lie about parenting more than they tell you the truth.... this stuff is confusing! It is the best journey of our lives, but there is a HUGE learning curve! Case and point: baby wrapping.

Baby wrapping is a way to hold the baby close to you, but be hands free. It was recommended by many a parent around us. You can do it with a carrier where the baby is kind of hanging out in it, or with a baby wrap. A friend of ours gave us their old moby wrap, and told us it helped her a lot. We would see her in church and on the go with her sweet daughter wrapped snug like a pro to her chest! It looked so natural and easy. We were stoked to be as cool as her and all the other Moms and Dad's who rock the wrap...we soon found out it is not that simple!

We take the wrap out of it's pack and it's just one huge piece of fabric! It has a book of directions, but they were way to confusing for Beka, so she did not even try it....Michael, however, was much braver. He took that long, confusing piece of super fabric out and was determined to master the wrap. Beka was in the other room when she heard, "Honey.....Honey....can you come help me!?!" This is what she came out to find

Once Beka determined that neither of them was in immediate danger of suffocation, she grabbed her phone to capture the moment of wrapping FAIL. We are not even sure how Michael and Emery got into this position, but this is NOT how the pictures in the book look :)

Emery was such a good sport about it though. He was making all of this little sounds and staring at Michael like "really Dad....really?" It was priceless! It is one of our favorite pictures. It captures the "figuring it out" stage of parenting that we are in right now. It also shows the humor in it all. It is tough learning what a baby needs, and how to survive the process, but we laugh a lot, lean on each other, and make it though with many funny memories like this one.

Eventually we figured that darn wrap out. It took some squeezing, tying, re-tying, and re-squeezing our poor guy into this wrap, but we did it! Luckily Emery has the same Team Oakley patience and ability to see humor in every situation. We are all learning together, but it's getting better.

Mr. Emery now loves being able to be so close to Mom and Dad when we are walking, or doing things around the house. He falls asleep really fast in the wrap. He is warm, close to our skin, and can listen to our heart beat. It is a really great contraption, but it takes a while to get. So if you are a new parent, be patient! Baby wrapping takes time to master, as does any new parenting thing!

This little guy is new and confusing to figure out sometimes, but it is all so worth it! I mean, look at him! He is the best thing to ever happen to Team Oakley. When these little eyes look up from that darn wrap, it makes all the silly mistakes totally worth it.

We are sure there are going to be so many more FAILS (some that we did not document: the dreaded pack and play, the swing, the first Diapers, baths, trimming the fingernails, and trying to eat while holding him...yes Beka somehow got sour cream on his face....and yes, Emery did try to eat it), so while we can still laugh at the craziness, there will be more blog posts to come. So stay tuned!

Love,

Team Oakley

Mr. emery is Learning how to smile!

Mr. Emery is learning how to smile! And that makes mom and dad smile big too :)

He is the happiest in the morning, when he wakes up and Mom and Dad have him in the big bed (we scoop him out of his cradle right before he wakes up). Then he is all smiles when we are changing him, and feeding him the morning rounds. He loves seeing us! Every little sound from us can prompt his toothless grin. It makes our hearts soar! We wanted to share that joy with all of you:

How can that not brighten your day! He is such our joy! I hope you all shared in his smiles!

Dinosaur World for Michael's Birthday!

It is Michael's Birthday!

To celebrate this joyous occasion Beka planned a fun filled day at Dinosaur world (yes there is such a thing)! It is about two hours away in Kentucky. It is a small park that is devoted to all things dinosaur! Michael loves the dinos, and now that he has a son to share that love with, it is a family affair. Plus, his Dad and Mom were able to come too!

Emery was up bright and early to celebrate his dad. He wore his finest dino outfit in anticipation of the day!

Michael wore his dino shirt too (it just happens to say Emery :). Even though it was a late night with a baby, Michael was SO excited to head out the door!

When we picked up Michael's parents (Nana and Pappy), they brought a stuffed dinosaur for Emery.

We are all ready to go!

It was a long and beautiful drive up North. We were so excited when we hit the state line!

Once there, it was not long before we looked out the window and saw this:

We are here! We are at dinosaur world!!!!!

Dad and son are SO excited!!!!

Everything was themed out. This is the trash can.

Hooray for dino world!

Team Oakley cannot wait!

We paid, got our bands, and we are ready to experience the fun!

Inside was a whole dream of dinos; everything was so fun!

Yes, even the bathrooms were themed out.

There was a fun playground for the munchkins.

There was a movie theatre playing a BBC special about the life of a dinosaur.

The movie was enthralling to Emery.

Next we walked down a dino nature trail where there were statues and information on different dinosaurs.

We all had lots of fun :)

It was a beautiful day, and we were able to enjoy the sunshine (and some love).

We got to the top of the nature trail, and went into Mammoth Garden.

Then we were able to take a photo by the HUGE dino on the side of the freeway.

The walk was wonderful. Every single one of is thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Next we went into the Museum.

The fossil dig was closed :(

But luckily the boneyard was open! Michael and his dad got their dig on!

Emery watched in amazement...can't you tell :)

On the way out there was a big dino mouth that you could take a photo by...we took full advantage of the opportunity

The day could not have been any better. It was a great adventure, and we will always remember the day of the dinosaurs.

Thanks for sharing it with us!!!
