Anniversary 2011, part two

Anniversary 2011 part 2.

Team Oakley has made it to 4 years of marriage! Thursday November 3rd 2011 marked that momentous date, and we celebrated our marriage with a day together, and a movie (read part one of this blog post for the awesome details). But we wanted to celebrate more than just that day, so we took some time on Saturday, the 5th, to keep the party going! We decided that Beka would plan the first part of the day, and Michael would plan the second part. Neither of which went according to plan (as is Team Oakley’s MO)

The night before the big day, Michael’s curiosity got the best of him, and so did Beka’s excitement, so she broke down and told him what she had in store; a day of out door fun on the Natchez trace (a nature preserve local to us) and an assortment of fine cheeses and snacks to enjoy while day camping.

But part of Beka’s plan was to get up SUPER early to start the day, which was quickly vetoed by her counter part (she admittingly did not protest the veto).  So that part of the day changed. We woke up leisurely and packed the car to go. We got coffee (a must!) first, then we were on our way!

On our way, Michael needed to make a stop for his part of the date. HE wanted us to all make Christmas stockings! So on the way we stopped at Jo-Ans craft sore to get supplies. While we were there, we saw on our find my friends app that Rosanna (Michael’s sister) was working near us. We decided to go and surprise her at work with a  diet coke (that we had emery hold when we walked in. Too Cute, I know).  So that took some time out of our planned day, but it was worth her smiles and knowing that we loved her (and I mean, Emery brining her a diet coke….totally worth her face seeing him holding it).

Then we were finally on our way to start our day! Well, almost. As we were passing all the restaurants near where Rosanna was working, the same thing happened that always happens…Beka got hungry. She never gets mildly “oh, I could eat” hungry. It jumps from “nah, totally not hungry” to “I have to eat right now or I will pass out!” hungry. Now she does have low blood sugar, so that may have something to do with it, but it always makes for a laugh and pit stop.

So we stopped at a favorite place of ours, five guys burgers and fries, and happily stuffed ourselves. They have a mean veggie option, so Beka loves it. We spent some time in there, and fed Emery too (after he woke up).

Now, Finally, we were off on our day! We made our way to the trace.

Beka told Michael to pick a place where he wanted to set the tent up. This was an issue. Michael is that guy who will circle the parking lot 5 times to wait and see if a spot up front opens up. Beka will part three miles away at the first spot she finds and walk. But this part of the day was not up to Beka, it was up to Michael to pick the final destination. So we drove and drove in that awkward time of “well, that one we just passed was nice, but I bet there is a nicer one just a little bit further up.” That awkward time last almost an hour. Finally Beka vetoed (if he got one that he used to same himself from and early wake up call, than she could use hers to save herself from the purgatory of finding “the best” spot) and they pulled off to the next landing they saw. You really can’t go wrong on the Natchez Trace, it is all going to be stunning, and this place was no different.

We set up our tent and loaded all our fun goodies in (including Emery’s whole activity mat so he could party with us).

Once FINALLY in the tent (only 6 hours later than planned) we started to relax and enjoy the great outdoors…inside a tent. We kept the door open, so that counts.

Beka proudly pulled out all the cheese that she had bought on sale the day before, and set them all up. Right as she cut into the first plastic shrink wrap of the first cheese, the tent filled with an nauseating stench that rivaled a dead-mouse-Emery-diaper-bad-cat-box-at-it’s-worst smell. It was AWFUL! No wonder it was on such a great special at Kroger! No lie, we THREW that cheese straight out of the open door of our tent (it’s biodegradable, right? I mean it smelled half way to death already, so we figured it would not be long until it decomposed to it’s earthly grave where it belonged).

Luckly the other cheeses were good. One was supposed to be grated, which Beka did not know, so that rock did not get eaten much. Our favorite was the cheese with the blueberries in it. It almost made up for vomit cheese from before….almost.

So now the portion of Beka’s day had ended, and it was Michael’s turn to take the celebratory reigns. We had all of the supplies to do the craft that he wanted to do, but in trying to set it up, he realized we had zero space to do it. Fail.

So the stockings were out of the question, and we still had some time to spare, so we just snuggled Emery and took silly family photos. It was not bad after all J

We were lounging in the tent, thinking about leaving, and watching the sunset, when Michael took a look in the parking lot, and noticed there were no more cars…..NO MORE CARS! OH YEAH! THE PARK CLOSES AT DARK! THAT MEANS THE GATES LOCK AT DARK! Holy Rotten cheese did we pack up that tent fast! Emery was such a good sport waiting for us to bust our butts loading up the car. He just stayed in his stroller and watched us mad dash to the car and back to the tent about a hundred times. We gave him a giant leaf to entertain himself. He was not amused.

After BARELY making it out before dark, we headed home to finish Michael’s portion of the date (which consisted of a nice dinner out).

On the way home we got a call from some friends of ours who we have been wanting to hang out with for months. They were free tonight, and tonight only…So as we say in the Team Oakley Home “Blessed are the flexible, as they will not be bent out of shape”. So we dropped Mr. Emery off with his Nana, and we headed to our friends house for some games, and much needed quality time. It was not what we had planned, but it was sweet nonetheless.

After the friend time, we picked up Emery, and we were all exhausted from our day of planned/unplanned chaos. We all went to bed early, and slept very, very well.

Never take your plans to seriously, they will often change (especially if you are in a relationship with a musician, someone with low blood sugar, and one month old). The more easy going you are, the more life’s little bumps will not get to you.

Thanks for coming along on this adventure with us. We hope you enjoyed yourselves!

Love,
Team Oakley
