10/27/12 Nexus Halloween party!

Team Oakley has the privilege of running our Church's youth group called Nexus. We get to teach them, play games, talk with them, help them, and most important, listen to them. It's not easy being in high school and jr. high. They can be the toughest years. We enjoy being a safe place for these kids. All they need is some love and understanding, and Beka and Michael are more than happy to provide. Emery too. They all love Emery.

So to celebrate the wonderful kids in Nexus and the changing seasons we had a Halloween party! We planned to meet the kids at our house then walk to the grocery store to pick out pumpkins. The problem with that plan was it was FREEZING! So we changed some things around, one of the student's Dad brought his mini van, and we loaded up and drove to the store instead.

Emery got to use his winter coat from his Nana and Pappy for the first time. It is so big and warm. It will get lots of use for sure.

He couldn't really move in it. Adorable.

While Michael and the students were picking out pumpkins, Beka and Emery did some exploring. EMery loves to explore at the grocery store. It is like a wonderland of sights, smells, and textures.

Emery needed a snack, so he found his favorite. Banana! He walked right up to the stand, said "banana", grabbed one, then took a huge bite out of the side of it.

Emery loves hanging out with all the students. His friend Kyle liked pushing Emery in the grocery kart. Emery like it too.

What Emery did not enjoy was the weather. He didn't really know how to react! It was so cold!

Once all was bought we headed back home start in on our pumpkin masterpieces.

It was the first time carving for some of them.

And where there is party, there is junk food.

Some of the students liked taking out all the pumpkin guts. They thought it felt cool.

Some did not like it.

We love these kids! So silly!

Once all the guts were out, Beka started separating the seeds. We made three kinds of pumpkin seeds this year. Fried in butter, baked in a sweet mix (thing cinnamon and sugar) and baked savory (lots of garlic and red pepper).

Even though he could not eat any of them, Emery was very excited about the seeds. He loves watching his Mamma cook.

We ate, we carved, we had fun. Everything went smoothly and the kids had a great time. That is success in our eyes!

One of our student's mom made these for Beka and Michael. They are pretty accurate!

We hope everyone is having a great pumpkin season! We sure are!

Thanks for reading,

Love
Team Oakley
